Human Services, Associate of Applied Science

Program Description

Students will begin to explore the field of Human Services. Students will identify aspects of individual, family and social behaviors and the steps involved in resolving problems utilizing social services systems. Students are provided opportunities to practice skills such as empathy, active listening and cultural competency to engage in ethical helping practices that promote human growth, dignity, respect and self-determination.

Program Outcomes

  1. Analyze the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of human service workers in a variety of social service settings.
  2. Apply interpersonal and group skills needed to effectively work with diverse populations.
  3. Apply culturally responsive and culturally specific approaches to effectively serve clients in an inclusive, nonjudgmental environment.
  4. Apply case management skills, including documentation, assessment, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and use of appropriate community resources.
  5. Demonstrate professional and ethical standards and show responsibility for professional growth.

Career Considerations

The Human Services program prepares students for entry-level jobs and future careers in private and government social service agencies, schools and business. Jobs include social work assistants, community outreach workers, substance abuse and recovery counselor, crisis intervention aide and/or case management aides.

Advising Notes

  • Working knowledge of MS Word
  • Students with a criminal record are urged to research employability before entering the Human Services Program. If a student enters the program with a felony conviction, they should realize the impact on their Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) opportunities and employment. Most agencies have background check requirements.
  • Students who hold a current CADC license from the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon should contact Academic Advising about receiving credit for prior learning towards UCC's Human Services degree and Addiction Studies certificate. Current CADC 1 or higher certificate holders may be eligible to receive up to 12 credits for the following courses: HS 102, HS 150, HS 155, and 3 credits of HS 280.
  • All courses must be passed with a grade of C or better.
