Program Description

The Paramedic Certificate program at Umpqua Community College is designed for students who hold an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution and have an active Oregon EMT license. This five-term pathway provides focused training that equips students with the advanced skills and knowledge needed for paramedic-level emergency medical care. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for a licensing exam, building on their foundational EMT training and previous educational experience to advance their career in the EMS field. This program prepares students to meet the demands of entry-level paramedic roles in a variety of healthcare and emergency response settings.

Our program is committed to providing high quality initial emergency medical services education. We offer quality resources, effective teaching practices, and use advanced technology. We advocate respect, sound judgment, compassion, integrity, and teamwork as a foundation for customer service oriented patient care.

To prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

The Umpqua Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Program Outcomes

Students who complete the Paramedic Certificate at UCC will be able to:

  1. Perform accurate scene safety and patient assessments in emergency medical situations.
  2. Use oral and written skills to communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the health care system.
  3. Perform all basic and advanced skills in a safe and timely manner maintaining personal and professional well-being while ensuring patient safety
  4. Demonstrate appropriate emergency medical and technical knowledge as required in emergency medical situations.
  5. Apply professional values and ethical behaviors individually and as a team member of a team in providing emergency medical care.
  6. Apply legal knowledge and medical ethics in all patient care situations.

Career Considerations

Graduates with the degree should be able to find work as EMS paramedics, hospital technicians, or community paramedicine.

Program Entrance Requirements 

It is required that students are currently licensed through Oregon Health Authority at the EMT, AEMT, or EMT-I level, and possess an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. (Note: The degree can be in any field.)

  • Must have documented results of immunizations
  • Must successfully complete a fit for duty, physical agility test, and drug screen
  • Must pass a background check
