Emergency Services, Associate of Applied Science
Program Description
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Emergency Services at Umpqua Community College is a two-year program designed to equip students with foundational skills for a career in emergency medical services and prepare them for advanced paramedic training in their second year. In the first year, students complete coursework that builds essential knowledge in emergency medical response, patient care, and professional readiness, setting the stage for entry-level roles and success in the program’s advanced courses.
In the second year, students advance to specialized paramedic training, designed for those with an active EMT license and foundational emergency services education. This portion of the program mirrors the Paramedic Certificate, emphasizing advanced emergency care techniques and preparing students for licensing exams. Graduates of the AAS in Emergency Services program are well-prepared for the challenges of a career in EMS and meet the qualifications required for a range of healthcare and emergency response positions.
Program Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Services will be able to:
- Perform accurate scene safety and patient assessments in emergency medical situations.
- Use oral and written skills to communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the health care system.

Program Entrance Requirements
- Must have documented results of immunizations
- Must successfully complete a fit for duty, physical agility test, and drug screen
- Must pass a background check
- Minimal requirement: Computer with broadband internet connectivity; Windows 7 or newer or MACOS 10.6 or newer. Video viewing and Zoom conferencing may be held at the discretion of the faculty.
